Friendships across the ages through Intergenerational Linking

25/07/2022

Year 2 children at Beckfoot Priesthorpe Primary School have been linking with Bingley Wingfield nursing home since 2020 and recently made local news with the stunning birthday card they made for resident Fay Mitchell! Children have also visited the care home to celebrate the jubilee together with a gnome trail, garden party and singing – including a joyful joint rendition of the national anthem.

Intergenerational linking is taking place across 29 different schools in the Bradford district facilitated and supported by the team at The Linking Network. Just like schools linking, intergenerational linking builds community and enables children and young people to take part in youth social action. Intergenerational linking has so many benefits for children and young people – an opportunity to learn new skills and wisdom from the older generation, developing compassion, empathy and communication skills, as well as boosting their sense of well-being and self-esteem. It also enhances many aspects of the wider curriculum as children engage in writing for purpose, learn about the history of their local area and take part in art, sporting and music projects.
