Circle in a Circle
Circle in a Circle (Powerpoint)
Two circles are needed for this game: an outer circle facing inwards and an inner circle facing outwards! A great game to use to structure meaningful interaction between pairs, with children sharing their names first and then their favourite foods, things that make them smile etc.
This game enables children to interact with as many children as they can from their link class in a relaxed, fun way by greeting them in a different way each time.
Want to play a game of Human Bingo to quick start your class linking day? We have three different versions for you to choose from; download the one you like and you are good to go! Each version is editable so you can make any changes to include your class/link class’ likes or dislikes.
This game is a good starter as it familiarises everyone with names. It can be played as part of a carousel or in small groups at the start of the day.
Friendship Questions (Powerpoint)
Our interactions with others can leave a lasting impression. In the lead up to a class visit, it is helpful to explore what it means to be a welcoming school. Use these friendship questions to discuss questions such as, ‘What does friendliness look like?’ and ‘How can we help someone feel welcome?’ to help children develop a deeper awareness and empathy of the skills that are needed to be welcoming and friendly.
Where Do We Live?

Time exploring ideas about belonging and community through the question ‘Where do we live?’ creates an opportunity to develop children’s sense of belonging locally and globally. Use this PowerPoint in class, to locate each school and to start thinking about places in the local area that children consider to be important to them. Places of significance can then be shared across link classes.
This game is designed to develop and teach children to read non-verbal social cues. You may choose to play this with your class in the lead up to a linking visit in helping children to recognise what someone looks like when they’re experiencing a certain emotion.

As linked classes read the poem and work together to explore the questions, ‘Where do we live?’’ and ‘How do we all live together?’ Caring about something beyond ourselves and having a shared goal is a great way to form confident connections with others.

Here We Are is a wonderfully illustrated book by Oliver Jeffers, where readers are taken on a tour of Earth. The key messages of acceptance, kindness and caring for the planet (and its inhabitants) are conveyed in a simple yet effective way. Use this PowerPoint to explore these key themes in class. This book is an excellent primary read for anyone wanting to weave caring for the environment into their Schools Linking class visits. The two main characters in this story, Funni and Zoo form a friendship while working together to plant seeds and grow a garden in a plot of land. Use this PowerPoint to discuss the impact planting trees and flowers can have on the environment. On a linking visit day, you may choose to decorate plant pots and plant seeds together or you could create shared garden collages.
Mapping Places We Care About
Mapping Places We Care About (Powerpoint)
On a linking visit day, this is a really great activity to encourage children to think about a shared sense of community. In groups or pairs, children create giant maps of places that matter to them, including their schools.
Build empathy and care for our environment by encouraging children to think of small ways we can help to make the world we all live in a better place. One way this could happen is by guiding link classes to think of different ways we can reuse materials that can’t be recycled. This PowerPoint contains activities that could be done on a class visit day, this includes recycling materials to make games. Why not end your Linking day with a carousel of games, featuring all the different games that children have made together during the day!
‘Imagine a world where everyone is kind. How can we make that come true?’ What better way to help others feel welcome than by showing kindness? Weave this theme through your linking visit days! You could create Kindness Calendars, make kindness jars or posters for the walls- the possibilities are endless.

When given the opportunity, we find that we have more in common with others than we might initially have thought. Explore the key questions ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Who are we?’ by finding and celebrating similarities and differences during your class visits.
Freedom Park (Powerpoint)
Taken from the fantastic book ‘We Are All Born Free‘ by Amnesty, Freedom Park shows Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “We all have the right to life”. In class, children can explore the different messages they can see within the image and during class visit days, children can work collaboratively to create their very own version of Freedom Park!

During a class visit day, you may choose to connect your visit to the four key questions or to a specific theme. The main aim is to select a range of collaborative, inclusive, enjoyable activities that create a relaxed, friendly environment that promotes meaningful interaction and dialogue. Abstract Portraits (Powerpoint)
Begin your linking day by finding visible and invisible similarities and differences. Pairs can then create abstract portraits of one another- this could be in the style of Pablo Picasso or Paul Klee!
Explore the significance of shields and coats of arms on a linking visit day! Children can work in pairs to create their own ‘linking’ coat of arms.
Design an Ideal Adventure Playground
Design an Ideal Adventure Playground (Powerpoint)
Playing in the park can be a great way to spend a couple of hours- even better if it is with a friend! For this activity, children are given the opportunity to share what they love about their own local parks before putting their heads together to design their very own ideal adventure playground.
Building Iconic Buildings and Building Bridges of the World
Amazing architecture can often leave people filled with wonder- why not give link pairs/groups the chance to become architects during their linking visit day? Children look at images of either iconic buildings or bridges from around the world before they then attempt to make their own version of a chosen building/bridge of their choice using the resources they have been given!
Hand Art (Powerpoint)
A simple but brilliant activity which can be done in pairs (or even threes!). On an A3 laminating pouch, partners draw around each other’s hands and then decorate using materials such as coloured cellophane and coloured sequins. Once completed, the pouch can be laminated, and the hands can be cut out- they look fantastic on display.
An activity which includes a sports theme, modelling with plasticine and ends with taking a photograph of the completed masterpiece? What’s not to love?! This PowerPoint supports a valuable chance to look at what a good sports person looks like. Children think about the Olympic and Paralympic values and how they can learn from these. A popular activity, which is ideal for a class linking day.

A great book, which can be used to develop emotional intelligence and promote positive interaction with others. This PowerPoint contains ideas for work in class as well as activities for linking class visits.

‘There’s only one you in this great big world. Make it a better place…” This beautiful little book is full of simple yet powerful wisdom, which is relevant for us all. A strong message about individual liberty and equality for all echoes strongly through the book. Within class, use the slides on the PowerPoint to explore and celebrate all the things that make each of us unique. There are also ideas for collaborative activities that are ideal for linking class visits. If you fancy something a little bit different why not take a look at the drama activity, which has been developed especially for a linking visit day.

Visiting a new school for the first time can be very exciting and a little nerve wracking! Help prepare your visiting link class with a taster of what they have got to look forward to by sending them information before they visit. This PowerPoint contains some ideas as to how this could be done in class.
Reflection in class between exchanges and between class visits is very important to the learning from the project and Evaluation of Schools Linking over the years have highlighted the importance of reflection to embed learning. These reflection questions have been developed to support teachers with reflection in class.

A useful PowerPoint to help establish guidelines in class for talking and listening. The goal is to create a safe space for meaningful dialogue. Children create their own lines for the poem ‘Speaking and Listening’ by Roger Stevens.
The TLN Identity Pack is a series of six lessons, which have been created to develop dialogue around identity, diversity, uniqueness, community, sense of belonging and equality. It draws upon a poem in the book Skin Again by Bell Hooks, which helps move conversation about skin colour forward for children. ‘The skin I’m in is just a covering. It cannot tell my story…For we are all inside made up of real history, real dreams and the stuff we all hope for.’

PowerPoint for a powerful lesson about people who stand up for things they feel strongly about. Pupils talk about Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, and then hear the stories of Lime Balla, a Muslim who saved the lives of Jewish people in Albania, and Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved children during World War II. Children think about the characteristics of these people and how they did not stand by when needed by others.

Bringing the Year to a Close
As we approach the end of the Summer term, we would like to send huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to linking this year. Your involvement with The Linking Network is very much appreciated and despite the changes due to the Covid-19 lockdown, many special moments have still been shared as a result of your creativity and commitment. We can’t wait to continue our journey with you all next year!
Schools and classes are learning in quite different ways now; we thought some of you may be interested in finding ways for children to bring their linking year to a close.
This could be by coming together to watch a Celebration Day powerpoint; receiving or exchanging a certificate (with and without dates); sending a rainbow message to thank a linking class (using our template or designing your own); or perhaps a game?

Explore feelings through words and images taking inspiration from the book ‘Feelings’ by Libby Walden. Take time to think about different emotions and how you can describe them. You could create a feelings tree, design your own emoji or use art to capture a feeling.
