The Intergenerational Play project continues

“I’m 102 – you’re never too old to dance and play!” – Resident, Shipley Manor

This year, enjoying the title of UK City of Culture, Bradford has come alive with events designed to connect people of all ages through culture and creativity.

One strand of this celebration is PLAY, Bradford 2025’s year-round programme of free activities for children and families. As part of this, we have been delighted to partner with Bradford 2025 on the Intergenerational Play Project, bringing the joy of play into older people’s care settings across the district.

Through this partnership, we have worked with 20 schools and care settings, connecting children and older people together to enjoy the unlimited potential of play. 

We’ve seen wonderful relationships grow through this project, with many schools choosing to continue visiting their linked care settings beyond the planned sessions – from bingo afternoons to singing in choirs for residents.

Recently, two celebration sessions have been held, really capturing the warmth and connection this project brings. 

Children from Hirst Wood Nursery School spent an afternoon at Shipley Manor Care Home, led by Danni Pells (Little Movers). There was dancing, parachute games and a lovely moment where children shared artwork they had made especially for the residents.

Later that week, Miriam Lord Community Primary School visited residents at Priority Care Home for their own final celebration session. Their project, led by folk duo Reuben and the Bridge, filled the care home with music and dancing.

Intergenerational Play projects will continue across Bradford until December. 

This partnership has widened the reach of Intergenerational Linking across the district, creating more opportunities for children and older people to connect and build relationships rooted in creativity, laughter and shared joy.
